The School of Social Science & Public Policy is one of the largest groups in any UK university to focus on policy-orientated, multi-disciplinary teaching and research. It has consistently received top ratings in successive
Research Assessment Exercises and in
QAA subject reviews of teaching.
It is made up of six Departments, Defence Studies, Education and Professional Studies, Geography, Gerontology, Management and War Studies plus seven research Centres / Units. In addition, an interdisciplinary taught programme in Public Policy is based in the School.
The strength of the School is based both on work developed by individual scholars that is helping to set the research agenda in the UK and internationally and on multi-disciplinary collaboration that helps the School to provide a range of innovative undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The School is also engaged in College-wide initiatives involving collaboration with, for example, the Institute of Psychiatry and the School of Law.
