The Institute of Advanced Musical Studies, located within the Department of Music at King's College London, was founded some twenty-five years ago with two purposes in mind: to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among musicians and musicologists from all over the world through colloquia, special seminars and small conferences; and to promote its own (full fee paying) certificate for graduates who want to pursue a year of graduate study with one of its members (
Certificate of Advanced Musical Studies). Initially it was directed by successive Heads of the Music Department, Thurston Dart, Howard Mayer Brown, Brian Trowell and Curtis Price; in 1990 it was reconstituted under the directorship of Reinhard Strohm.
IAMS publishes a series of study texts (see the
Humanities Publications List (pdf)), and mounts
weekly public colloquia.
