Analytical Sciences Research Interests

The research focus of the group is on the development and application of analytical techniques to identify, characterise and quantify compounds and their metabolites in biological matrices. The group has extensive expertise in the analysis of drugs. Recognition of the strengths of this integrated group with respect to the separation sciences and mass spectrometry have resulted in a number of grants, including several from the EPSRC, and also the US Anti-Doping and the World Anti-Doping Agencies.

Within the wider scientific community, this group's on-site expertise with hyphenated techniques continues to help evolve the Mass Spectrometry Facility for supporting research and the Drug Control Centre continues to be a world-leading laboratory for doping control in sport. Other interests of the group include the use of nanoparticles for forensic purposes, the emerging field of metabonomics, and the development of optical biosensors to detect microbial contamination in clinical and environmental samples.
